Working From Home: Three Reasons Why It’s Challenging & Three Reasons Why It’s Amazing

Estimated Read Time: 3 Minutes

Remote employees are becoming more and more common in companies. There are many pros and cons that come with being a remote employee. But is being remote the best choice for your career?

Why It’s Challenging

Separating Work & Home Life

It can be difficult separating your home life from your work life. When you work remote it’s tough to have the same separation between working from home and working in the office. When you’re in the office it’s easier to turn off the work part of your brain when you leave every day. But when you work remote it’s a lot more challenging when your work and home space coexist. It can sometimes be hard to concentrate on work when you see a pile of dishes in the next room or a load of laundry that needs folding.

Not Fitting Into Company Culture

It’s tough avoid that feeling of isolation when working remote. It’s important to have a strong team that does a good job of keeping remote employees included and up-to-date on what’s going on around the office. But even when you have that strong team, it sometimes can be tough – missing those in-person interactions with your coworkers. Email, IM, and phone calls help, but it’s not quite the same as being able to walk up to someone’s desk to chat or ask a question.

Time Management

When being a remote employee, it can sometimes be tough managing your time. While it might be easy for some, time management can be challenging when you’re working remote. There are a lot of distractions in the office, but that doesn’t come close to the amount of distractions outside of the office. It’s tough to finish binge watching the 5th season of “The Office” and to also get all of your work done.

Why It’s Amazing

Flexibility

A great part of working remote is the flexibility. You’re able to work from almost anywhere, and your schedule allows you to work whenever you’re free. Plus, it’s hard to beat being able to work in your pjs all day.

Increased Productivity

This might be hard to believe, but remote employees have the potential to get a lot more done when they’re at home. There are a plethora of distractions when you’re in the office. People coming to talk to you, parties or celebrations always happening, or just hearing someone near you laughing and having a great conversation can all be major distractions in the workplace. These are distractions remote employees don’t have to worry about. With the lack of distractions, such as these, remote employees have the potential to be a lot more productive.

No More Commuting!

Commuting is bad for you. The longer the commute the more stressful your drive to work can be. A lot of time in your car commuting can lead to lower levels of happiness and higher levels of anxiety. Drop having to drive in the traffic and enjoy being able to work from home!
