Building a Recheck Policy

A pre-employment background check is performed to maintain a safe work environment for employees and customers, and to protect your organization’s reputation. You made sure that your new employee did not have an unacceptable record when you hired them – but who’s making sure their record remains acceptable while they are employed?

Did you know… 95% of employers conduct pre-employment background checks, but only 67% of employers perform criminal record checks on an on-going basis for current employees?

Consider adding rechecks to your screening policy to mitigate risk. You get to choose – do you want to perform rechecks quarterly? Once a year? Will you run a recheck on all employees, or just a percentage of your workforce? Validity can randomize your roster and submit recheck background checks based on the percentage you identify. If you have positions with driving or transportation responsibilities, continuous (real-time) monitoring of driving records is available for all of your driver positions.

It’s important to create a formal policy so employees understand how frequently the rechecks will occur and what the expectations are. For example, if a new record is found, how will your organization handle it? Does your organization already have an expectation for employees to report interactions with law enforcement, such as arrests, warrants, and court dates?
