HR Compliance Expert Talks Social Media and Identity Theft

Mike Fowler, Validity Screening Solutions, to Speak at NAHRA and Arkansas CUPAHR

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (April 27, 2015) – Mike Fowler, Validity Screening Solutions, will present to NAHRA (North Arkansas Human Resources Association) and ARCUPAHR (Arkansas Chapter of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources) on the use of social media in the hiring process and the risks of identity theft.

While it may be quick and easy, there can be significant ramifications to using social networks in the employment screening or investigative process. “Social media is a provocative new tool for screening applicants,” says Fowler, “It offers insights not available through traditional mediums, e.g. resumes and CV’s. As we venture into this new and unknown territory, there are plenty of legal landmines waiting to be stepped on. This presentation identifies these landmines before your organization steps on them.”

Fowler’s presentation, “#EmploymentScreening – The Risks of Engaging Social Media in the Hiring Process,” will highlight the risks involved when employers incorporate social media as part of the hiring process. Attendees can expect to learn how to define “Social Network Background Checks” as outlined by the Federal Trade Commission, how to avoid FCRA violations made when information is obtained from social media, and how to understand the EEOC’s view on social information impacting employment.

This presentation will be held at the NAHRA monthly meeting on April 28, 2015 in Harrison, Ark. at 12:00pm.

Identity Theft is best controlled when individuals create personal and familial barriers, thus the training encourages a “contagion” effect as a solution. “Identity theft has become a hot topic over the last year with all the large scale data breaches,” says Fowler. “Now, more than ever, it is important to recognize, prevent, and re-mediate identity theft.”

The presentation, “Identity Theft Prevention,” will educate attendees on the scope of identity theft and practical preventive measures. Attendees will have common misconceptions dispelled and be briefed on the real circumstances that put individuals at risk.

This presentation will be held at the ARCUPAHR Conference on April 29, 2015 at the Degray Lake Resort in Bismarck, Ark. at 10:00am.
